Q: What if I want to write a letter to the editor of the two Goochland Papers? A: Great idea; in fact, have your child write one. It means a great deal when a young child cares enough to write a letter. Be sure to put your child’s age and team name! For example, John B. age 8, Richmond Strikers Crickets.

Q: How many fields will be developed and by whom? A: Preliminary plans show space for 8-10 full size soccer fields. VHB, a commercial engineering company along with Markel Insurance Corporation, have generously donated their time to complete a comprehensive Plan of Development and is prepared to send the proposal out for competitive bids as soon as the county gives its approval of the plan. Our goal is to have the fields operational by spring 2008.
Q: What portion of the Strikers programs will be moved to West Creek if the plan is approved? A: The Richmond Strikers Fields at West Creek will be used primarily for practices and tournaments after work hours and on weekends.
Q: Will this impact any residential developments in Goochland? A: No, the land is in the West Creek Office Park and borders Route 288. The entrance and exit is easily accessible from the highway with no impact to residences.
Q: Who will pay for the development? A: Markel has generously completed much of the planning phase for the Strikers and due to the nature of the site, much of the grading and preparation has already been completed by the land’s former owner Motorola. The Strikers will incur costs to develop, irrigate, plant and maintain the fields, but the offset from Cosby’s expenses and strong fiscal position of the Strikers, makes this a viable option for the club. While the Strikers is reliant upon corporate and individual donations, there will not be a capital campaign or correspondent increase in fees specifically to fund this project.
Q: Why is the lease between Markel and the Strikers year-to-year? A: While Markel is totally committed to the Strikers and this project, it is a prudent business decision to keep the term of the lease short to keep the company’s options open regarding this property. This is not unlike the leases between Cosby and other non-Striker owned properties which are also short-term in nature. This is a common practice in our business.
